Accessibility
Access to justice is not complete until it is also fully accessible.
Conformance goal
We target WCAG 2.2 Level AA conformance across the entire portal, plus selective Level AAA criteria that directly benefit self-represented litigants — including enhanced contrast, no time limits on content, and plain-language definitions of legal terms.
What we do
- Full keyboard navigation for all interactive elements
- Visible focus indicators on every focusable element
- Color contrast ratios of at least 4.5:1 for text
- Touch targets of at least 44×44 pixels on mobile
- Semantic HTML and ARIA labels for screen readers
- Responsive design that works across devices and zoom levels
- Enhanced contrast ratios of at least 7:1 for body text
- No time limits on reading legal information
- Plain-language definitions for legal terms and abbreviations
Testing
We combine automated accessibility checks on every code change with manual keyboard and screen reader testing for each new feature. Periodic full-site audits verify conformance against the complete WCAG checklist.
Standards tracking
We review our practices against current W3C accessibility guidelines annually and will update our targets as standards evolve.
Known limitations
AI-generated chat responses may not always have ideal heading structure or reading order. Streaming responses update the page progressively, which may affect screen reader announcements. We are actively working to improve these experiences.
Feedback
If you encounter an accessibility barrier, please let us know at info@free.law. We take all feedback seriously and will work to address issues promptly.
